Dr. Brian Schmidt Discusses Thyroid Disorders and Surgery

Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are usually treatable with medications and non-surgical means. However, surgery may be required for a variety of reasons including:

  • Benign or cancerous nodules
  • Enlarged thyroid glands
  • Overactive thyroid glands

The types of thyroid operations performed by the surgeons at Paragon Surgical Specialists include:

  • Excisional biopsy – removing a small part of the thyroid gland (rarely in use today)
  • Lobectomy – removing half of the thyroid gland (the most frequent way to remove a nodule)
  • Total thyroidectomy, which removes all identifiable thyroid tissue
